Fall Gelb: Battle of Holland

Seventy years ago today, Holland woke to the sound of war. German forces, conducting Fall Gelb (Case Yellow) had invaded Holland and Belgium, having already taken Luxembourg the night before. The British Expeditionary Force and French forces headed north as fast as they could, but it was too late to save Holland. The Dutch fought their hardest, their air force, outnumbered and outgunned still manage to account for some two hundred odd Luftwaffe craft.
The Dutch finally stood down after the Germans threatened to bomb Rotterdam to the ground, the raid was ordered to be cancelled but communication errors meant that it happened anyway, killing some eight hundred civilians.
Even after the official surrender, fighting continued in the province of Zealand for another five days with the assistance of the French.
It would be another four years, and some two hundred thousand deaths before Holland would be free once again.
